The PR Cuban Festival will take place at City Hall in downtown Houston. Click here for a picture of CityHall. Some streets in downtown will be closed for the festival, it hasn't been mentioned which streets will be closed. Google Directions and a Map of Downtown will come in handy. In the map of downtown, CityHall is C 10.

To find the group inside the festival, please meet us at the VIP Tent. When you arrive at the fair, ask a festival employee to tell you were the VIP Tent is. The VIP tent will be to right of the stage. The group will be near the VIP tent. Please meet us inside the festival at 4:00pm, it will make it much easier to find one another.

Text messages probably work best to communicate; the music can be loud, which makes it hard to hear on phone calls. You can text message me at 832.250.7933.

Tickets can be purchased online for $8.00 a person. [Buy Tickets Online], and they can be purchased in person at Cafe Piquet and Dodo's Chicken.

This will be a one of a kind opportunity to meet Puerto Ricans and PR Enthusiasts in the Houston area. We'd like to have your help by spreading the word about the Puerto Rican Culture Meetup. We'll talk about the simple ways to help our meetup group grow.

Kick off the fourth of July with good company, great food, and fun activities. Ivonne has graciously allowed us to host this gathering at her house in Livingston, TX.

Great Food Whether you dust off an old cookbook, phone a relative, or search online, it's all good if it helps you find a recipe you really like. With so many delicious Puerto Rican foods, it might be tricky to just decide on one.

Fun Activities We can go swimming, play dominoes, play pool. relax/chat on the porch. And if someone wants to bring a volleyball net and a volleyball, there is room to set one up. If you would like to swim, Stuff to Bring: sunblock, a towel and a bathing suit

When you RSVP, please include what you'd like to bring. We'll need food, utensils, napkins, and paper plates for those who attend.

Ivonne will also be providing huge amounts of bottled water and about 4 gallons of pineapple and orange juice in a ginormous cooler, as well as some snacks with snacks.. Ivonne also purchased a canopy for over the food table. We should be well stocked with beverages and have a cool area to have our potluck.

Puerto Ricans and Cuban have lots in common. My friend, born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico, told me a quote in Spanish that says Puerto Rico and Cuba are the wings of the same bird. There are similarities in the culture, in the food as well.

Growing up, my father would take me to Cafe Piquet. Seniors would gather inside the restaurant and get into loud debates about various subjects. I was too young to understand what they talked about. Back then Cafe Piquet also had a grocery store. Each time we went we'd buy yeya crackers, plantain chips, and lottery tickets. hahaha I always won money back from the scratch off lottery tickets.

Cafe Piquet has since moved twice. Each location has been better than the previous. Their newest location is in Bellaire. It's the most elegant Cafe Piquet so far. On their website, you can view photos and the menu.

They have the best Cuban sandwich at Cafe Piquet. The sandwich consists of pernil, ham, swiss cheese, and toasted bread makes it delish. It's lightly buttered then put in a sandwich press, which melts the cheese and toasts the bread. It's so good. The pickles served on the side are the best pickles. If any of you know the brand, please let me know. I'd to buy them. LOL

Pernil is a large inexpensive cut of pork, known as pork shoulder. In addition to ham or turkey, some Puerto Rican families serve pernil around the holidays.

One of my favorite desatinations in Puerto Rico is the Florescent Beach, a magical sight. At night the water looks like a star-filled sky. There are many interesting historical sites, delicious Puerto Rican foods, memorable night life, and of course enjoy the beautiful beaches.

As the nursery rhyme goes April showers, bring May flowers. Spring time in Houston is in full swing. It is an ideal time to frolic outside, soaking up the sights of spring. For our potluck picnic, bring your favorite Puerto Rican dish for the Puerto Rican Enthusiasts of our meetup group. This will be a joint meetup between The Houston Spanish Language Meetup and The Houston Puerto Rican Culture Meetup. The picnic will be international with several Latin American countries represented. It's a great time to show your favorite Puerto Rican dishes.

Ideally, everyone brings something homemade. I have always thought that homemade Puerto Rican food tastes better than what is offered at restaurants. I admit I am biased towards the Puerto Rican food that my father cooked. What are your favorite Puerto Rican dishes? It doesn't hurt to call a Puerto Rican friend or relative for recipe ideas.

The scenic location of our international potluck is Hermann Park. You're welcome to bring your camera! ;o) Apart from the beautiful fountains, gazebos, and flowers, there are 101 fun things to do at the park. We can even go for a ride on pedal boats after our feast. ;o)

About Plena
"The plena's lyrics deal is often called "el periodico cantado", or a kind of living newspaper. Singers recite the events of the day and often satirize local politicians or scandals. Sometimes plenas are filled with biting satire; at other times, they comment on major news events of the day, such as a devastating hurricane. But not all plenas are historically significant or deal with social commentary. Some are just fun, or personal, playful or humorous, with no relationship to news, events, politics, or protest. But whether the lyrics deliver a serious protest or lighthearted fun, the plena remains a vital cultural part of the community's expression. MusicofPR.com
